Short answer
For September 2027 starts, most European MBB offices take graduate applications between July and October 2026, with interviews running into December. Internship windows for summer 2027 run from fall 2026 to January 2027. Tier-2, Big Four and Dutch specialist firms mostly recruit on a rolling basis. Deadlines vary by office and change every year, so confirm each one on the careers page.
Key takeaways
- European MBB offices mostly recruit graduates between July and December for starts the following year, and each office sets its own dates.
- Some offices run several intakes a year: McKinsey Netherlands publishes roughly monthly Fellow (intern) deadlines, and Bain London offers five start months.
- Big Four, Roland Berger and Strategy& mostly review applications as they arrive, so early applicants face less competition for open seats.
- Dutch one-year master's students must apply for the following September in the first weeks of their program, before any master's grades exist.
- Experienced hires can apply year-round at McKinsey, and Roland Berger asks for three to four months between application and start date.
When do consulting firms recruit in Europe?
European consulting firms recruit most graduates between July and December for start dates the following year. For a September 2027 start, that means applying between July and October 2026. Internship windows for summer 2027 run from fall 2026 into January 2027, and experienced hires can apply all year.
One rule overrides every table below: deadlines vary by office and change every year. European offices set their own calendars, and a firm's US or UK date says little about Amsterdam, Munich or Paris. Even the main prep publishers disagree: Hacking the Case Interview's Europe guide says London, Paris and German offices often open July-September and close by early October, while its general timeline page says European offices open in June with July deadlines. Treat both as reported ranges and check the careers page of each office you target.
Fixed deadlines or rolling applications?
Firm type is the best predictor of how a firm handles timing. Under a fixed window, every application is assessed after a set date. Under rolling review, applications are assessed as they arrive, and the role can close early once seats are filled.
| Firm type | Examples | Graduate roles | Internships | Label |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MBB | McKinsey, BCG, Bain | Fixed windows per office; some offices run several intakes a year | Fixed windows; BCG Netherlands accepts Visiting Associate applications year-round | Official (office pages) |
| Tier-2 strategy | Oliver Wyman, Roland Berger, Strategy&, Kearney, L.E.K. | Mixed: Oliver Wyman UK uses fixed deadlines; Roland Berger and Strategy& recruit continuously | Oliver Wyman UK: fixed, may close early | Official (Oliver Wyman, Roland Berger); Reported (rolling status of Strategy&) |
| Big Four consulting | Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG | Mostly rolling; offices close when full | Mostly rolling | Reported |
| Dutch specialists | Gupta Strategists, Berenschot, AEF, TwynstraGudde | Per vacancy, mostly rolling | Per vacancy | Reported |
For rolling firms, the practical deadline is "as early as you are ready". A strong application in September competes for more open seats than the same application in February.

Internships in Europe: timing and conversion
European internship timing is less uniform than in the US. Bain London and Oliver Wyman UK restrict their summer internships to penultimate-year students and recruit in the preceding fall and winter. BCG Netherlands offers 2-4 month Visiting Associate internships year-round, aimed at students late in a bachelor's or in a master's, and McKinsey Germany is reported to take Fellow interns from the third bachelor's semester.
Internships often lead to full-time offers, which is why firms use them. No firm in this article publishes a conversion rate, so treat any percentage you read online as an estimate. A useful plan is to apply for internships in the penultimate year and keep the full-time window as a second chance.
The one-year master's problem
Dutch master's programs last at least one year and 60 ECTS, and many run exactly one year. A student who starts in September 2026 and wants to start work in September 2027 must apply in September or October 2026, in the first weeks of the program. At that point the transcript shows only bachelor's grades.
The same student often falls between internship rules. A one-year master's is a final year, so "penultimate-year" internship programs may exclude it, unless the firm counts the last bachelor's year as penultimate. Ask the recruiter before ruling yourself out.
Four workarounds help:
- Apply for internships during the final bachelor's year, when you are clearly penultimate.
- Apply for full-time roles in the first master's semester with bachelor's grades; BCG Netherlands accepts provisional master's certificates.
- Target offices with several intakes or start months, such as McKinsey Netherlands, BCG Netherlands and Bain London.
- Apply right after graduating to rolling firms for a January or spring start.
The Dutch consulting jobs guide covers language rules and local firms that recruit on their own timelines.
Stephan's note: For Dutch students, the safest move is to treat the summer before the master's as application season. Have the resume, cover letter and first 15 practice cases done before the first lecture.
MBA and experienced-hire timing
MBA and advanced-degree recruiting runs slightly later. Hacking the Case Interview reports that European MBA applications open August-October, close October-November and end with offers between November and January. McKinsey's advanced-degree page, written for North American schools, set 11 August 2026 as the Associate deadline for candidates graduating between December 2026 and fall 2027. The consulting MBA guide explains when the MBA route makes sense.
Experienced hiring has no season. McKinsey states that it accepts experienced-professional applications throughout the year, Roland Berger asks for three to four months before the ideal start date, and Strategy& Netherlands aims to reply within about 10 working days. Bain London sends anyone with more than two years since graduation to its experienced-hire process.
What to do 12, 6 and 3 months before you apply
This backward plan assumes a September 2027 start and applications in September 2026.
- 12 months before (September 2025): Build a target list across firm types, note each office's deadline type, and secure a leadership role or quantitative project for your resume. Apply for penultimate-year internships.
- 6 months before (March 2026): Write a one-page consulting resume and a cover letter template, attend firm events and start the case method and daily math. Check whether any target office opens early, as McKinsey UK did in January 2026.
- 3 months before (June 2026): Practice the online tests your targets use (see consulting assessment tests), run 20 or more live cases and prepare five fit stories. Follow the six-week preparation plan so you peak in October.
- Application month (July-October 2026): Apply early in each window, sit online tests within days and keep practicing until the final round.
The Prep Pack bundles Cracking the Case with both PST practice books at about a 40% discount, covering case and fit interviews plus the timed exhibit drills that online tests reward.
Frequently asked questions
When should I apply to McKinsey, BCG or Bain in Europe?
For a September start, apply between July and October of the previous year, as early in the window as possible. Some offices, including McKinsey UK in 2026, have opened as early as January, so check your target office's page in spring.
Do European consulting firms have rolling deadlines?
Many do. Roland Berger, Strategy& and the Big Four are reported to review applications on a rolling basis, and seats can fill before an advertised closing date. MBB offices tend to use fixed windows.
When do consulting internship applications open in Europe?
Mostly in the fall before the internship. Bain London expected to open its 2027 internship window in November 2026, and Oliver Wyman UK set 15 January 2027 as its deadline for summer 2027 internships.
Can I apply after I graduate?
Yes. Offices with several start dates or rolling intakes, such as Bain London, BCG Netherlands and McKinsey Netherlands, accept recent graduates, and Bain London treats candidates with up to two years since graduation as graduate hires.
How long does a consulting recruiting process take in Europe?
Usually six to ten weeks from application to offer. Bain London's 2026 cycle ran from a mid-October deadline to final rounds in late November and early December.
